Metering Oversight & Accreditation
BYERA supports accurate metering and consumer confidence by regulating key metering-related requirements under the Electricity Law, 2025. The Law empowers BYERA to examine and approve meters used (or intended to be used) for measuring electricity consumption, and to prescribe accreditation requirements for persons who install electric meters for end-users.
What this service covers in practice
1) Meter approval and technical acceptability
BYERA can review and approve meters to ensure they are suitable for accurately measuring electricity supplied to consumers. This supports fairness in billing and reduces disputes linked to inaccurate measurement.
2) Accreditation of meter installers
BYERA can set requirements for accrediting persons involved in meter installation for end-users. This helps ensure installations are done safely, correctly, and consistently reducing faults, tampering risks, and customer complaints.
3) Consumer confidence and dispute prevention
Accurate metering is central to consumer trust. By regulating meter suitability and installer competence, BYERA strengthens transparency in billing and supports more effective complaint resolution where metering issues arise.
4) Link to broader compliance oversight
Metering oversight also complements BYERA’s wider enforcement mandate because metering practices form part of service quality and licence-condition compliance that BYERA monitors and enforces.
The service includes but not limited to:
- Examination/approval of meters for measuring energy
- Accreditation requirements for persons installing meters for end-users
